Back From The Hospital and Our Plan

I wanted to do a quick update since I haven't posted in a few days. I've been busy because this weekend my eldest son was in the hospital. He came down with Henoch-Schoenlein Purpura (HSP). It's an autoimmune disease where your antibodies start attacking your own body. He had a painful rash and his joints all swelled up. He was in a lot of pain and was not able to walk, stand or really move at all.

He is home now and doing much better. He's back to acting like his normal self, running around and playing. However it is very clear to me after this, his eczema and asthma that he has a leaky gut and yeast overgrowth. I've decided to start the GAPS diet to try and resolve these issues. I will order the book in a few days, when my husband gets paid.

In the meantime I've decided that for now is he not allowed any cheats. So even if we go to a birthday party- no cake or sugar. I'm also making it a priority to serve a cup of bone broth and a fermented food with each meal.

I'll be back to my normal posts in a couple of days.

  2. Oh, poor baby! I am sorry he is going through this. My daughter had autoimmune problems and leaky gut from her vaccinations and antibiotics.

Fish oil and coconut oil really helped to heal her body.

    Good luck and hugs.

  3. Bobbi- He is my only child who recieved any vaccinations (up to 2 years at which point we stopped) or antibiotics and he is my only child with health issues. I definatly think there is a connection. Thanks for sharing your story!

  4. God bless him! Glad you are moving in a positive direction to resolve the probable underlying factor in all those issues! Both of my kids (18 and 16 years old now) have issues with allergies and/or eczema as well a few other issues that I believe are likely connected to gut issues along with vaccinations (through age 6--what was I thinking?). mercola.com ran a great article on the GAPS diet this week along with an interview with Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride. I have started my daughter on the GAPS protocol but think the whole family would benefit from it (just haven't fully convinced them yet!). Looking forward to updates!

  5. Poor guy. Having to be hospitalized is so hard on them (and the family). Hope the GAPS helps. My (almost 3 yr old)son has asthma and allergies and I'd like to be able to keep them under control without having to use medications. Take care!

  6. Is that related to Candida? I read that The Harcombe diet is good at controlling Candida. I was on it and it's not that difficult to adjust to Primal. Not sure if that applies to your situation...but anyway. hang in there!

  7. As far as I understand it (haven't read the book yet) the GAPS diet goes very well with primal eating. It is only whole food and there are no grains or sugar.

Thanks for mentioning the mercola article Jill, I'm going to go look it up now.

  9. Good luck with GAPS! We just started the Intro 11 days ago and have already noticed benefits. We're doing it mostly to heal my son's leaky gut/allergies/candida but I know it will heal us too. I'd love to hear updates on your experiences with GAPS!
