My Favorite Herbal Remedy Reference Book

I'm not the kind of parent that calls the doctor for every little cough. I prefer to treat my children at home if possible. That's why having a reference book is really handy. I have several but my favorite for herbal remedies is  Naturally Healthy Babies and Children by Aviva Jill Romm, MD.

I've used this book when my son's asthma was acting up. By using the tea and massage techniques she recommended he was able to breath normally and we avoided having to use his nebulizer.

This book covers almost every subject from colds to bug bites to food sensitivities. It lists basic information, what to look out for, when you need to seek medical care and herbal remedies.

Most of the ingredients used in the remedies are not everyday kitchen items. You will probably need to purchase them from a health food or specialty store.

I love Naturally Healthy Babies and Children but I don't recommend following the nutritional advice. It's only a small portion of the book however she lists a healthy breakfast as being scrambled tofu with toast. Yuck :(

I'm going to share with you a wonderful remedy from this book for sore throats.

Slippery Elm and Cinnamon Tea

1 teaspoon slippery elm bark powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder
1 cup boiling water
Honey to taste

Combine the dry ingredients in a glass cup. Mix well. Add the boiling water, cover and steep for 5 minutes. Sweeten with honey if desired. Serve warm. The tea can be taken anytime for general well being.

Please note that purchasing the book though the above Amazon link provides me with a small commission and helps support this site. Thank you!

  1. Hi! You may want to check out Shonda Parker's "Mommy Diagnostics." It is a standard for mommies and daddies who want to treat their children naturally and nutritionally.

Here's the info on it from her website:
    http://naturallyhealthy.org/books.php

    Mommy Diagnostics™
The Art of Taking Care of Your Family

"It is three books in one! Mommy Diagnostics is a textbook of common ailments including definitions, course of the illness, and at-home treatment options. It is a How-To book on making, storing, and administering herbal preparations. It is a workbook for health building, maintenance, and recovery. Altogether Mommy Diagnostics is about equipping us to take responsibility for the health of those under our care. This book is empowerment in print." Naomi Watson, Mother of Nine, B.S., B.S., P.A.

Shonda has several excellent books - on pregnancy all woman issues and real foods, but her Mommy Diagnostics is the one I feel is essential for every family.
